Discover Stortford is a dedicated page, specifically focused on Bishop’s Stortford town centre; business news, town centre events, new openings, and importantly, the people behind the businesses that make the town a special place to live, work, shop and socialise.
It’s a local page for local people. A whopping 73.3% of Discover Stortford followers are Bishop’s Stortford residents with a further 17% in the surrounding areas of Stansted, Sawbridgeworth, Harlow and Saffron Walden.
Discover Stortford is run by the Bishop’s Stortford Business Improvement District (more commonly referred to as the BID) in support of the bricks and mortar town centre businesses.
Here’s a bit about who we are…
📢A business-led, non-profit company aimed at improving a specific commercial area.
📢There are approximately 340 BIDs across the country, including the nearby towns and cities of Watford, St Albans, Welwyn Garden City, Chelmsford, Saffron Walden and Cambridge.
📢The BID offers a collective voice for local businesses – we are here to fight businesses’ corner, in what is an incredibly tough economic climate and time for high streets.
📢We deliver a location-specific business plan, compiled in collaboration with, and delivered on behalf of, the businesses. In the case of Bishop’s Stortford BID it includes:
Events (annual Festive Fun Day Chistmas launch event, trails and more…watch this space for 2026 plans!)
Business Support (networking, training courses, opportunity to be part of the Discover Stortford town centre gift card, Street Stewards and other safety initatives)
Place Making (lobbying for pedestrianisation schemes to improve the town centre experience, parking and traffic improvements, enhanced street cleaning, additional lighting schemes)
Marketing & Promotion (highlighting what’s here via our Discover Stortford channels)

📢Bishop’s Stortford BID’s joint managers are Madeleine Lees and Karen Burton. The BID also has a Board consisting of 11 business owners/managers and key stakeholders from across the town who meet monthly and are collectively responsible for directing the strategy, finances and activities of the BID.
