In recent weeks, the Business Improvement District (BID) has been engaging with the town’s people – business owners, residents and local partners, including councillors – to discuss possible pedestrianisation plans for North Street.
This initiative has stemmed from issues with footfall. We all know town centres are having to evolve to reflect the changing times we find ourselves in. The BID believes a ‘hub’ and gathering space is a vital part of this evolution. An outdoor entertainment area would also be a significant draw for our community.
By creating a more inviting atmosphere for pedestrians, we believe there is potential to attract new footfall and increase dwell time in Bishop’s Stortford. As far as the north-side of the town centre specifically, the closure of the Causeway and Charrington House car parks adjacent to Waitrose have undoubtedly had an impact, further compounded by the uncertainties around the Old River Lane development. Let’s give people a reason to re-discover this beautiful part of Bishop’s Stortford.
North Street is undeniably the heritage part of our linear high street, and as such, should be showcased and celebrated. It’s listed buildings, each telling their own story, plus the wide road, raised pavements and attractive streetscape, lend themselves to al-fresco dining, pop-up markets, street entertainment and cultural events, currently not available in Bishop’s Stortford town centre.
The BID has spent much time researching what’s gone before regarding pedestrianisation and the resulting road closures, diversions, delivery, and access plans for businesses. We’ve considered what’s worked, what hasn’t, both here and in other town centres, and intend to build on these learnings.
We are currently in the planning stage, discussing frequency, days and timings of any North Street pedestrianisation initiatives. The BID look forward to trialling events and further engaging with all stakeholders to evolve these plans.
